What is your word for 2013?

Frangipanis in my garden, summer 2013

I was speaking to a client this week and she has a yearly practice which she, and many of her friends, have adopted.  Instead of sitting down at the beginning of a New Year to make a list of Resolutions, she chooses one word which she would like to have to describe her year ahead.

This word could be “Truth”   “Engage”   “Strength”   “Perspective”   “Silence” – anything, really, that you choose.

This one word may describe something you may wish to address regularly.  It could be something you find challenging, or elusive.  In yoga, we call this a sankalpa (in sanskrit), We regularly choose one word at the beginning of each yoga practice, a word to return to in all circumstances. We may choose to keep this to ourselves.  Or not.  It is a precise declaration of good intention, that motivates you and aligns with your core.

My word this year is “Action“.  I have chosen to meditate on this, for various reasons.  My husband, James, has chosen “Opportunity“. 🙂

If you share your word with you friends and family, this will also make you accountable.  They will remind you of your word, when they notice your patterns (that you have consciously chosen to address) emerging.  Text your word as a New Year greeting!  Don’t you love this idea?

What is your word for 2013?  I’d love to share my practice with you.

  1. This is a great post Kimberlee. I did sit down and do the old page of resolutions!! But I have also come up with my word for the year – ‘Completion’! This year is going to be about finishing all the things I’ve started and get ‘complete’ with things that aren’t. 🙂

    • I know what you mean, Sharon. Action for me is not a word I usually use, this year it’s about taking a breath and stepping forward without fear, taking action. When I remember my sankalpa, I feel encouragement and support. Aloha!

  2. Trust is the word for me…to let go and trust in my process without that niggling ‘what if’, to trust that my intentions will guide me as I move forward.
    Thank you Kimberlee

  3. Amazingly enough, I had never heard of this practice until it started appearing on my Facebook newsfeed and after a couple of hours the one word that shone for me was ‘EASY’, definately the path I want to follow this year. Been making it too hard for too long….but it’s just all part of the learning. Wishing you a wonderful year of ACTION!

    • Happy to insprire – that just makes my day. Easy sounds good, I have been making things hard as well, blessings for an easy transition, Nikki 🙂

  4. Another great post Kimberlee…
    My word is ‘Calm’

It seems I look very chilled out and peaceful on the outside (I often get told this), often I don’t feel this way inside, I get very busy in my head. Maybe it’s so I can go slow on the outside…planning ahead maybe. But I plan to bring a little more of the outer me inside. 🙂

Have a fantastic year Kimberlee… The site is looking great. 🙂

  5. My word is victory – a lot of action has been done with much more action required but goals are being achieved this year already and I see many more yet coming to fruition this year

  6. My word is ” Courageous” so Courageous enough to make change and Courageous enough to accept change as well 🙂

    Aloha Kimberlee 🙂

  7. My favourite word throughout the years has been and will always be – Serendipity – because I love the idea of finding new things even if I’m not looking 🙂

But the first word that came to mind for 2013 is ‘Courage’.

I have quit my job and am now back in school (age 54) to become a wellness consultant. I wish to have the courage to go out there and start over!
